FAQs

What is dragon boat racing?

That’s a great first question and we have dedicated an entire page on the website to describe the sport with a helpful infographic and video on how to paddle.

I’m interested, how do I sign up?

Step 1: Check Meetup for new paddler practices

Step 2: Complete the New Paddler Waiver form

If there are none available, send an email to our club email address.

How do I become a member?

You will need to attend at least one practice and pay annual dues ($125/year). More information is located on the Membership page. All members are expected to review the Membership Handbook.

When are practices?

We generally practice on Saturday mornings before noon for 2 hour total time commitment including warm-ups, boat transport, paddling, and cool-downs. Team Chemo Kaze holds practices on Sundays.

Where are practices?

We practice on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, North Carolina. Parking is available in Lake Wheeler Park and you can find directions to the parking lot by entering the address below.

Lake Wheeler Park
6404 Lake Wheeler Rd
Raleigh, NC 27603

What level of fitness is needed to join the club?

There is no minimum athletic skill level or dragon boat paddling experience required initially for participation. We recruit both beginners and experienced paddlers who are open-minded and keen on learning the sport. If you are coachable and dedicated, our captain and coaches can help you become an excellent paddler.

What should I wear?

You will warm up quickly after paddling begins and you might get wet. Quick-drying fabrics are a good idea. Your shoes might get wet. For practices we wear shorts, t-shirts, water shoes (anything you don't mind getting wet), and a hat/sunglasses if you need it!

What equipment do I need?

The Raleigh Dragon Boat Club provides paddles and life vests for paddlers that need them. Some paddlers purchase their own preferred paddle and personal flotation devices after gaining more experience with the sport. Bring a water bottle full of water to stay hydrated on the boat.

How can I connect with the Chemo-Kaze team for survivors and their family and friends?

If you have specific questions about participating on the Cancer Survivor Team, Chemo-Kazes, please email the team directly!
